     This award winning documentary by noted bluesman Big Mike Griffin chronicles the creation of his song “Iron City Blues” from the first brainstorming session, to the trip to the actual town it is based on, to the studio recording and subsequent concert afterwards.  On his road trip to Iron City, TN, Big Mike joins forces with ex-Marine Jason Neese who acts as a guide to the town where people rarely venture alone.  Once there, the town’s history and current residents are researched.
    

     One of the most interesting things about this DVD is the town’s disreputable and lawless history - to this day they still do not have a town cop.  The colorful locals who are interviewed appear to be proud of their town’s rough heritage while maintaining a more even keel in the present.  The town isn’t entirely tame, but the residents and city officials claim that things are much better.  Without a doubt the most memorable local interviewed is “Monkey” Tidwell.  To entirely understand what he is saying, the documentary employs subtitles, there are even out-takes under the Special Features section that are not to be missed.
     Underneath and through it all are Big Mike’s skills as a blues musician.  By the time he hits the recording studio, he has a good feel for the town and it’s checkered past.  The resulting song and concert scenes are impressive.  The soundtrack CD included in the 2-Disc set is excellent and overall, this is a documentary many will watch over and over again as it is rich in Southern culture and attitude.
