. 24TH ANNUAL VERDE VALLEY TOY RUN . November 23, 2008 . Cottonwood . AZ .
This event was open to all motorcycles and hot-rods. Fun included a bike blessing and parade run through Verde Valley which concluded at The FULL MOON SALOON in the Village of Oak Creek with live music by "HAVE MERCY". Also, food, bike and car show, raffles and vendors were part of the event.
Rev. Papa Dave Treadwell was looking for some uplifting news to report for the 24th Annual Verde Valley Toy Run held last Sunday. It didn't work out that way.
"We did fine on the toys," Treadwell said Wednesday morning. "But there is never enough to go around. That's what the cash donations are for."
Treadwell told The Verde Independent a week before this year's run that, "The best we can figure is there are about 1,500 kids in the Verde Valley assisted through this program." He said the results this year were disappointing.
The Toy Run looks for all types of toys for all age groups of children.
"We were concerned about making costs," he said. "But we did. We did about $600 or $700 over that."
An example of how things went this year with cash donations was the 50-50 Split Raffle. Treadwell said the raffle usually brings in about $500 to be split. "This year it was $74."
Riders did show up. The run had 280 people register. "We had over 200 bikes in the parade," Treadwell said. Even so, that is between 60 and 80 riders short of last year's Toy Run.
"It's a sign of the times," Treadwell said.
This year, the organizers have 200 shirts left over. Those are available for a minimum donation of $10 each. Treadwell said he has small, medium, large and extra large sizes available.
