Roving reporter Art Hall, on his latest travels to the Far East, attended the Jogja Bike Rendezvous 2011 in the Kingdom of Yogyakarta which is on the Island of Java in Indonesia. Harley Davidson Club Indonesia (HDCI) Yogyakarta held Jogja Bike Rendezvous 2011's Kustom Bike Contest at the Jogja Expo Center (JEC) on 15-16 April 2011 and is considered the greatest custom motorcycle competition in Indonesia.
This year's show theme was "The Legend is Back" and had five main categories for the bike competition: Stock Custom Harley Davidson, Vintage & Classic Harley Davidson, Custom Stock non-Harley, Chopper & Retro and Pro Street. In addition to the five main categories, there were also "People's Choice" and "Best Paint".
Owner of Retro Classic Cycles Lulut Wahyudi explained there is a big dream for Indonesian custom motorcycles to have their own characteristic style and present cultural forms from all regions of Indonesia. His custom built bike featured on the flyer is amazingly detailed.
The competition applied international standards which included aspects of harmonization, technique and aesthetics as well as full motor function. In other words, the bikes not only had to look good and display competent engineering, but they had to run and be able to be ridden.
Indonesia aims to be recognized as one of the emerging forces in the custom motorcycle world and add to their economic base, too, by allowing the industry to flourish.
