In 1987 Wings of Gold motorcycle club President Bob Amchir, started the Toys in the Sun Run to benefit Toys for Tots. About 700 motorcycles participated in the event to which netted about $965. in cash and a little over 500 toys. These days, however, the event raises over $500,000 dollars and 60,000 toys with 30,000 to 50,000 motorcycles showing up. It is a very large draw and sees participants riding in 85 degree weather on a most beautiful sunny day in South Florida. It was as perfect as it gets.
The ride began at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hollywood, Florida where thousands of motorcycles got ready for the roll-out to Markham Park. It was one heck of a party, full of entertainment, food, drink, and plenty to do and buy. Before starting the ride, Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski gave a quiet prayer along with Rabbi Howard Needleman to start off the 27th year Run in the Sun. Charlie Daniels, the Blues Brothers and Soulicide performed, and oldie but goodie cars and trucks were on display. Everything from sunglasses to full leather outfits were for sale, even helicopter rides and riding in a big wheel monster truck. It was one grand party! However the best part of all was all the gifts for all the children that have so little, along with all the money that will go to the Children’s Hospital.
