73rd Bike Week Daytona Florida
Story and photos by Martin Twofeather
Every year I look forward to lots of bikes, builders, and beach and Daytona has it all. Great places to see and great places to be, but things are changing and not necessarily for the better and to make a great bike event and combine them with Spring Breakers was for the older crowd upsetting with a lot leaving early and those I talked to saying they aren't coming back anytime soon. Now for the younger crowd that I spoke to they thought it was great because there was no shortage of girls to go home with.
But from the Speedway to Destination Daytona the riders were there and some of the best looking motorcycles around it reminded me of Las Vegas on steroids, and of course baggers were the norm followed by custom bobbers and then the normal put everything on the bike possible group of people,it was fun interesting and without a doubt a great week.
On the boardwalk were lots of people looking at a well done display of art in iron, and Michael Lichtner taking photo's,he is the best and it is always great to see him and no matter what he has going on he still takes the time to say hi and shake hands. The sun was out and it was a warm Daytona beach day so the crowd was heavy and there was plenty to see and if you had a mind to you could ride the large Ferris wheel or the catapult, for me being shot up and down in a cage doesn't strike me as fun,but it didn't stop others from taking the ride of a life time.
Now moving on to Ted Smith's Rat's Hole competition where some of the finest custom bikes in the world are displayed and judged by his staff of professionals to see who becomes the champion and title holder in this years Rat's hole build off.My favorite was the sun gold and black bagger with the blower on it! But they were all sweet and a fun time to photograph. And of course the girl models are a very big plus,Ted it's another great job see you in Oct.
Destination Daytona and all it had to give where Paul Yaffe and Klock Werks have beautiful displays,Vance and Hines,Rinehart and Kuryakyn where all putting new exhaust and extra's on tons of bikes, and J&P Cycles full to standing room only with customers buying all the things they didn't have but needed.A great band played to a full house while inside Rossmeyer's Harley people were buying the newest and best Harley's in town, there was something for everyone even the kids.......
