Florida Toys in the Sun Run
Story and photos by Martin Twofeather
Over 30,000 riders participated in the Toys in the Sun Run, Sunday December 8th 2013. Two major South Florida freeways that are usually bumper to bumper traffic resembled flat open road found somewhere out west kicking off the 26th annual Toys in the Sun Run. Skies were blue, temp. was 85 degrees with a few rolling clouds. It was a perfect day for a ride with gifts for all the children who have so little.
Twenty one miles from the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach to Weston's Markham Park scores of police officers worked the morning event, for which the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 and the westbound lanes of 595 were closed for about 3 hours, and unlike last year no crashes, every thing went smoothly. Participants in this big charity event collected toys and money for the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital with the goal of a half million dollars, and pitching in was Bret Michaels with his $5,000 pledge in between songs as he sang on the stage.
There were thousands of people strolling around the park grounds buying everything from food to electronic cigarettes, even a few buying raccoon caps and watching the alligator show. It's a great event and it is all for the kids. There is nowhere I have ever been where you get this many bikers together in the sun for a greater cause than here. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from Florida.... Nothing like Christmas in Florida!
