Doug Horne captured an impressive 4th win in a row in the AHDRA Pro Fuel class at the Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg this past weekend.
The first two qualifying rounds at the S&S Jim McClure Nationals went well for the RAACE Foundation Family of Drivers member. He started with a solid 6.811 ET, landing him in the number one qualifying spot, followed by a 6.670.
Doug really had to buckle down on the third round of qualifying though. David Poague laid down a 6.611, 195 mph on his second run, tossing Doug out of first place. Horne was able to reclaim the top spot in the third round, answering Poague’s time with his own 6.611, 206 mph.
“He came back in the third round. There wasn’t a whole lot of outside pressure, but he put a lot of pressure on himself, even during qualifications, because those championship points were on the line,” said Doug’s father and crew chief, Steve Horne.
Eliminations on Sunday played out like the day before. Doug easily won his first three rounds, with ETs of 6.654, 6.719 and 6.707, respectively. Round four saw Doug head to head with the man who not only raced against him in the final round in two of the last three races but had just challenged Doug’s first place ranking in qualifications. Though friendly off the track, the two racers staged as fierce competitors.
As the tree flashed, David Poague laid down a 6.612, 199 mph. Doug was able to come out on top though, running his own 6.671, 206 mph thanks to a faster reaction time: .028 compared to Poague’s .107. That clinched not only another win for Doug, but his first Pro Fuel National Championship as well.
“It was exciting times. Even with championship points at stake, you just have to take it round by round. The great part about making it so far is that every round we advance, it gives the announcer that many more opportunities to talk about The RAACE Foundation, their efforts to spread awareness through the new www.raace.org and their mission to eliminate child sexual abuse by raising public awareness,” said Doug.
Doug and his team look forward to a great amount of support from the Harley-Davidson fans at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, KY. The AMRA Harley-Davidson Drag Finals will run September 25-28. Following that race, Doug’s Pro Fuel can be seen tearing up the dragstrip in Rockingham, NC for the Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts Nationals – Championship Finals. Team Horne is looking forward to getting out there and making a statement on behalf of The RAACE Foundation.
