Refabrication of ‘Big Twin’ January 2014
Story and photos by Dave Brackett
Well, it took several months, but I have finished my part of the restoration of "Big Twin". It was my chore to repair, replace or refabricate "Big Twin". Sadly it had been severly abused over the past years, but it was all fixable. I cleaned and removed everything, cleaned, lubed and replaced what was needed. brake cylinders, hoses, brake lines, etc. I had the transmission and vacuum booster rebuilt. Replacing the missing portion of the frame took some time, plus replacing rusted places.
The biggest job was fabricating the missing parts. They included the oil tank, headers, rear motor mount, jack shaft bearing supports, shift linkage, front end stops, the seat box to attach upholstery, the vacuum distribution system, and wheelie bars. Fortunately, I had many good photos, that allowed me to reproduce these parts with some degree of accuracy.
Now it's on the way back to Bones Legacy for completion. They will do the upholstery, paint and body work, rechroming, wiring and finish assembly. Soon "Big Twin" will be returned to her original glory.
