Evel Knievel on Tour

Words & Photos: David Owens

The Circuit of the Americas track in Austin includes a permanent Evel Knievel presence, thanks to the lifesize statue of the man and his Sportster at the main entrance,  At this year’s recent MotoGP race, his presence was felt even more as one of the largest collections of Evel Knievel paraphernalia made its debut. The collection includes five of Knievel’s original jump bikes, never-before-seen photos, X-rays of Evel’s broken bones, plus his iconic leathers and helmets. The famous X2 Snake River cycle was also on display over a pond inside the track.

Lathan McKay, owner of the collection, spent the last two years sourcing and restoring the items. He says “After years of Evel’s possessions being lost in obscurity and so many things sold, stolen or missing, Evel’s effects are finally coming back together.”

After making its debut in Austin, the collection will go on tour in Knievel’s Mack truck rig “Big Red,” which has also been completely restored. The tour includes a stop in Sturgis where the the items will be on display at the Buffalo Chip campground, so if you’re in town for the rally be sure to check it out.
